Engaging with art can be about our feelings.

In that vein, I found I was hankering after something inspirational as I was listening to a new jazz album. I kind of pride of myself that I’ve got the inspiration I need so I can take anything. But there was something uplifting about this jazz music, as if I needed it. Maybe because a lot of music I have been listening to is instinctual rather than what elevates the mind. Jazz this way seemed to do the trick.

Then, I felt inspired to uncover the media I am familiar with. What of it is inspirational? Or is even like it? This, for another day…I hazard a guess that there are a few media things that are inspirational. Then, I thought that one can bring to media a whole raft of different feels, from thrills to inspiration. In writing something, be that a book, a movie, a song, what does a writer want their reader/viewer/listener to feel? And how does one do this? Can the sender of the art design feelings in the receiver of the art? Or is it all a pot luck kind of thing?

I think a writer must be aware of what they are sending so that they communicate the message they intend to, but to fine tune that message to cause the receiver to feel something particular is a tricky and perhaps difficult art, to get it precise. Some things intended may not be received as such. The trick is making it work and then ask yourself, why do I want this person to feel something this way? It’s kind of scary, really, playing with feelings. But in the end, the audience is the end receiver, so ‘feeling’ art is very subjective.

Tell a story

I know there is a lot of bad news about, but if you turn on the television news, you’ll get some more. While there is a dearth of good television broadcasting, I am, strangely enough, watching the news more than ever. That is the current events. There is one channel I like, but the other one I don’t that much. While watching that one, I noticed a hidden niche for writers that hasn’t been tapped into that much. While the presenters weren’t telling us about how bad shape America is, they were recycling people’s dirty laundry. I saw the potential for a competitor — positive stories, done with charm and imagination. I know that half the world is in bad shape–but there has got to some good despite the dross? Do something differently positive to the latest fall from grace of a politician.

Media today

Is a product filling your media needs? Do you even have media needs, but still peruse the newspapers and websites for the latest piece of information? Me personally, I have media needs now. I want to know what’s going with the biggest story of the day: Covid-19. But even when I don’t have a big need for media, I’m still curious. The media is everywhere and provide the most seductive stories for good or ill. The Covid-19 stories are naturally seductive as this effects all of us. I’m finding the Covid-19 stories quite informative and interesting as well. I’m not trying to gauge the big picture, but gathering day-by-day the information that I need. With this issue, the media has been helpful and informative for me — while at other times it may not — and for everyone because we need to be up to date on this issue, for our safety and security. However, it can become too much when I get “depressed” by Covid-19 stories, so I tend to take a break then and keep my media to a minimum. In the end, I am only engaging the essential information, on an issue I need to know about. This is one time I need the media and want to know more, but must keep a check on when the negative creeps back in.

Reality and fantasy

Just say one wanted to write something for a monthly, with sixteen pages in between it’s covers. Well, sixteen is not much, I must say. Where would someone come in there, if one wanted something published every month, as a freelancer and not a staff writer?
